Costa da Caparica: wind & season guide
Costa da Caparica works on a beautifully simple engine: the summer Nortada thermal. Sun heats the land, air rises, and a north wind fills in along the coast almost every afternoon from late spring to early autumn. Here's what to expect through the year at Praia da Bela Vista, 20 minutes from Lisbon.
High season — May to September
- Wind: thermal north wind on most sunny afternoons, typically 12–20 knots, strongest from June to August. Mornings are usually calm — lessons run in the afternoon window.
- Water: 16–19 °C — a 4/3 wetsuit (included in our lessons) keeps you comfortable.
- Air: 25–35 °C and reliably sunny.
- Crowds: the public beach fills up, but our 250 m student-reserved stretch stays workable all summer.
Shoulder season — April & October
Thermals are less regular, but Atlantic weather systems bring wind of their own. You'll get fewer bookable days but often emptier water. We watch the forecast and confirm lessons two days ahead — flexibility is rewarded with some of the best sessions of the year.
Winter — November to March
Wind comes from passing fronts rather than thermals: southerly winds before a front, north-west behind it. Between fronts there are calm sunny weeks. Winter is prime time for kitewave riders — the swell is bigger and the beach is empty. Beginners are better served waiting for spring.
How to plan a lesson around the wind
- Contact us with your available dates — the more flexible, the better.
- We confirm the session at least two days ahead based on the forecast.
- If the wind doesn't show, we reschedule — you never pay for a windless lesson.
